Historical reminders

The first finds of residents in Villar Focchiardo seems to have taken place in 2000 BC.
The first documents referring to the village name were done on the 31st of July 1001, when it is mentioned as "Albereta", and in a second document from the year 1029 where the village is called with the name of Villare Fulcardi.

The meaning of this name is not really clear: the word "Villare" was used to indicate a group of houses which were used by the villici, the farmer taking care of the feudal fields; the word "Fulcardi" was probably the name of some local lords.

For centuries, the village inhabitants have been interested in the political and religious events of the Susa Valley because of this major communication axe which was the road currently called National SS24. It definitely influenced the village tradition even if the local population managed to keep its own identity.

The population formed in 1281 a community, then the territory was split into several counties commanded by several lords: Di Giaglione, De Clause, Medagli, Bonino, Roero, Bertrandi di Bruzolo, Canali, the noble Felisi de Rivoli, Baratonia and the Carroccio who disappeared in 1796.

Ignazio Carroccio was vicar of the Saint Michael de la Chiusa (Turin) and founder of the Saint Giovanni Vecchio Hospital of Turin.

The Rumiano family was important too because “Giuvànn d’Rumian” was the faithful companion of King Carlo Alberto when he was in exile.
Doctor Biagio Rumiano, voluntary soldier of the Garibaldi army during the independence wars, also studied palaeontology and prehistory.
